The purpose of this site is to foster social
interaction between the Scottish Highlands and our many Russian speaking
friends. Several events are planned for the coming year and this is
where we shall post details, dates and venues of the events.
We
are happy to announce that after several years of successfully
organising events, our efforts have resulted in the 'Highland-Russia
Connection' gaining charity status.
Our first
festival of Scottish-Russian connections was a great success.
On 5 and 6 September 2009 we had a Russian Dance Workshop with Liz
Forrai. Liz is a really excellent teacher and everyone enjoyed this
very much and would like to continue with these dancing lessons. We are
sometimes invited to perform at other events and our next performance
will be on 22 October 2009 at Falcon Square in Inverness (if the weather
is fine) and in the Eastgate Shopping Centre next to Falcon
Square. We have performed at Falcon Square before as part of the
Highlands "R" Us multi-cultural event and we have performed at the
Eastgate Shopping Centre as part of our project "Russian Cultural
Demonstration" at the HIghlands 2007 Inverness Fest. We also performed
at the Invergordon Fleet Festival, Invergordon in 2007, in Elgin at
Elgin Museum in April 2008, in Glasgow at the Kelvingrove Art Gallery
and Museum in June 2008 and in Nairn at Nairn Museum in August 2008 on
the opening of our exhibitions "Russian Culture in the Highlands". If
anyone would like to join the Highland-Russia Dance Group at any time
please do not hesitate to contact elena.k.reid@homecall.co.uk
Inverness
Museum and Art Gallery November 2009 The Highland Games was held in Moscow, Russia for the
first time in June 1997 with the help of people from Nairn. At the International Exhibition in Kelvingrove Art
Gallery and Museum in 1901, the Russian pavilion won the first prize. The Matryoshka dolls project in 2007 featured 30
Matryoshka dolls painted by local artists, supported by Highland 2007.
The dolls were on display in Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum, at the
Scottish Parliament and other venues. The picture
of Robbie Burns, in Soviet poster style, was the winning exhibit for the
art competition. In 1956, Russia was the first
country in the world to honour Robbie Burns with a commemorative stamp. You will see exhibits in the form of pictures and
photographs related to the above. The
charity runs art competitions on
Scottish-Russian connections and if you would be interested in taking
part please contact us. For further
